Jon Edwards (Maine, USA)
After practicing civil rights and environmental law for over twenty years, Jon Edwards has spent the last five photographing the inhabitants of the islands and coastal regions of Maine. Edwards’ stunning black and white photographs celebrate a world where people live close to the land - where fishing, harvesting seaweed, planting, making pies, and hanging laundry out to dry are still an integral part of life and work. His recently self-published book won first prize for Proposed Books from the Prix de la Photographie, Paris. He lives with his family on the coast of Maine splitting his time between photography, law, and organic farming.
Louis Perreault (Montreal, Canada)
Perreault will be showing lovely black and white images of tossing grasses, the sea, and rain swept landscapes and portraits. Mostly taken in Canada’s maritime provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, and the Magdeleine Islands, the images are less an examination or documentation of the landscape, and more an emotional paean to the journey. This is Perreault’s first U.S. exhibition. He currently teaches photography at Concordia University, in Montreal.

Images Capture Moments of Vulnerable Grace, and the Fisherman's Unforgiving Lifestyle.
Charles A. Hartman Fine Art is pleased to present Fish-Work by Portland-based artist Corey Arnold. These photographs capture moments from Arnold's grueling annual retreats to the Bering Sea and arctic Norway. With scenes of boat life so vivid that some shots can induce fear or seasickness, the artist's perspective also reveals the tender soulfulness of a fisherman's extended life at sea. His skillful compositions depict the simultaneous bravery, toil, humor and gumption that "fish-work" demands. Yet the series also illuminates the aesthetic sublimity that can only be experienced, ultimately, by those willing to risk their lives where the sea breaks its back. Having survived several seasons afloat these icy and unforgiving waters, we are lucky that Arnold has taken time to document his artistic impressions of this rare lifestyle and extended us a vicarious glimpse.
A graduate of the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Corey Arnold lives and works in Portland, Oregon the nine months of the year that he is not fishing. He has exhibited his work across Canada and the United States, in addition to Norway, Japan and France. Recent publications featuring Arnold's work include Rolling Stone, Adbusters, Juxtapoz, Giant Robot, Artweek, Outside and National Fisherman. With international attention beginning to gain momentum for this promising young photographer—Fish-Work, on view at Charles A. Hartman Fine Art, November 19 – December 20, 2008—is an opportunity to collect Arnold's work before the secret is out.
MERGE: A MULTI MEDIA EXPERIENCE:::CALL FOR ENTRIES
Merge is a film and art exhibit that will explore the mixed and multi media genres, and show at the University of Oregon’s Adell McMillan Gallery. This exhibit will highlight contemporary mixed media artwork from local, statewide, and regional college level artists along with multi media film work. The goal of this exhibit is to expose our community to up and coming artists and to an art form that is not only pushing boundaries and provoking thought, but is also exciting to engage in and create.
Along with a month long film and “fine art” exhibit, we will host a one night only multi media film event that will allow the audience to experience and interact with creative and exciting new forms of film making.
The intent of this show is to bring innovative, diverse, and exciting artwork to the U of O Campus to be experienced by the students, faculty and local community. Although the mixed media genre has existed for sometime, we would like to challenge artists to create new works that further explore this idea of mixed and multi-media. We are opening this call to B.F.A. and M.F.A. students only, giving these emerging artists the chance to gain exposure and experience in showing their work. To foster this innovation and creativity, we ask artists to submit whatever they feel falls into the genre of mixed media. Paintings, photos, drawings, fiber work, digital work, collage, 2D, 3D, sculpture etc, are all acceptable and encouraged to be submitted. Size is limited to gallery spaces. Each artist may submit up to three pieces for this show but up to two pieces may be selected.
